The cause of education in Yangzhou enjoys sustained prosperity. Yangzhou University is a comprehensive multiple-subject key university of Jiangsu Province. It is comprised of seventy colleges, fifty-one departments, ninety-nine specialties, fifty-one research institutes or sections, in addition to three hundred and sixteen laboratories. It has an enrollment of fifteen thousand full-time students. There are 25 million volumes of books in its libraries. There are 415,000 in its 726 middle schools and 8,300 in its vocational training schools. 292 township schools have adopted 9-year compulsory education.
In 1994, 601 programs of science and technology were developed, among which 19 "torch programs" and 39 "star programs" were approved and financed by the state or province. The total investment value amounted to 540 million yuan. In terms of high-tech development, one export-oriented agricultural model zone, six high-tech enterprises and twenty-nine high-tech products were developed. Thirteen villages and towns were honored as provincial high-tech models.
