As one of the ancient cities in China, Yangzhou has been a place
full of cultural activities and artistic flavor. It has spawned
many famous artists and leading figures in many fields. It was
noted for its poems, ci (a literary genre flourished during
the Song Dynasty), drama, printing, carved figures, fine arts,
piano, chess, calligraphy and painting, all of which possessed
distinct features. The artistic and academic activities promoted
by Yangzhou Painting School and Yangzhou Academic School at
that time made the city one of the national cultural centers.
After the founding of the new China, the traditional culture
here was protected and developed to some extent. The present-day
cultural scene here has been filled with various kinds of literary
and artistic works, which has envigorated cultural life within
the city.
