Wesport is recognized
nationally for the achievements of its educational system. Graced
with some of the most renowned teachers and administrators in
the world, the education a Westport child receives from Kindergarten
through the twelfth grade is unsurpassed. Success is recognized
through the system's outstanding performance on a range of standardized
tests.
The system includes:
- Long Lots Elementary
School
- Coleytown Elementary
School
- Coleytown Middle
School
- Bedford Middle
School
- Staples High
School
The Educational system
in Westport works with four "core values" in mind.
First, the Westport Board of Education believes that every child
should cherish the attainment of academic excellence. Also,
in a cooperative learning environment, it's important to act
with respect and speak with kindness to one another. Students
must also respect each person's right to a safe and productive
learning environment, in addition to holding the responsibility
to protect personal and school property. For more than five
years, more than 91 percent of the Staples graduating class
have continued their education. Over 82 percent have gone on
to four-year colleges and universities
To satisfy the students of Westport and allow them to achieve
the most from life, the Westport educational system and all
those involved with it decided upon a set of goals to master.
They include, among others:
- Providing all
students an excellent foundation of knowledge in academic,
athletic, artistic, creative and civic education;
- Responding to
student needs that can be addressed through a variety of
curriculum offerings, instructional methods and counseling;
- Supporting the
non-college-bound student as well as the college-bound student
and educate all students about career options;
- Addressing the
emotional and social needs of adolescents growing up in
a volatile and vulnerable world;
- Challenging
each student to attain a level of academic excellence that
corresponds to his or her ability and interests
All students progress
from entrance in Kindergarten, usually at the age of five or
six, through graduation as a senior, after passing twelve grades
of study. The ages of graduating seniors range from sixteen
to nineteen years.
