Veterans DayVeterans Day is an important national holiday that occurs every year on November 11. Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served or are serving - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty. Many wonder why some schools do not close in observance of Veterans Day. The fact is that there is no legal requirement for non-government enterprises, including schools, to close. Many schools do close, and some do not. Some that do not close hold assemblies honoring our veterans. This year, Staples is holding a special ceremony in the Library Media Center. On August 3, 2001, the United States Senate unanimously passed Senate Resolution 143, designating the week of November 11 through November 17, 2001, as National Veterans Awareness Week. The resolution calls for educational efforts directed at elementary and secondary school students concerning the contributions and sacrifices of veterans. America is #1 thanks to our veterans!
