Summer Reading 2003 Grades 9-12 Please choose two books, fiction or non-fiction, and read them before the first day of school. Please choose books you have not read before. Choose books at your reading level or that challenge your reading level. If you choose a title that has recently been made into a film, be prepared to explain the differences between the film and the book. For suggestions, check out the new Pagebreaks, or the reading lists provided by the Westport Public Library, the Staples LMC, or Barnes & Noble. The Westport Public Library website will also have resources for you (www.westportlibrary.org). If you are an eighth grader, you might consult book lists provided by Coleytown and Bedford Middle Schools. Or, talk to your friends, parents, or teachers about their recommendations. Read Actively. If you own the book, you might highlight important parts and write notes in the margin. Or, you might mark key passages with post-it notes. Some students prefer to keep a double-entry journal, writing down passages from the text in the left column and their personal reactions as well as their analysis in the right column. Come to your English class the first day of classes prepared to write or talk about your books. If possible, bring the books. Be sure to bring the notes you have taken for use in your English class. Enjoy your reading!
