INDEPENDENT STUDYCredit varies Quarter/semester
A student may receive Independent Study credit for developing and executing a plan of study taken under the direction of a Staples faculty advisor. Credit is determined by the number of hours a student works on the project or assignment. Experience-based programs such as Internships can be set up on an independent study basis.
Students are responsible for developing an independent study contract, which indicates:
1. Learning objectives for the project 2. Activities that will be undertaken 3. A method of evaluation
The proposed contract must be agreed upon in advance by the student, the Staples faculty advisor, the guidance counselor, a parent of the student, and the Division Coordinator of the appropriate department. Independent Study credit is contingent upon the completion of an Independent Study contract. Independent Study contract forms are available in the Guidance Office. After the necessary signatures are completed, the contract form must be brought to the Guidance Office for final approval by the Coordinator of Guidance.
In the second semester of senior year, seniors may only do independent study through Senior Options.
