Freshmen welcome!

At Staples High School, the Asian Cultural Society invited Ms. Phoebe Eng as a guest speaker in the library on February 7th.
Phoebe Eng is a former corporate attorney who practiced in New York, Hong Kong and Paris. She is a former publisher of A. Magazine, the leading publication for Asian Americans. She is an award winning community and business leader who has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, PBS, NPR, as well as in several media industry and legal trade publications for her perspectives on race and gender dynamics. Phoebe Eng is the receipient of the New York City Mayor Innovator’s Award for Outstanding Young Woman in Business in 1993, the Arthur T. Vanderbilt Medal, and the 1999 Distinguished Service Award for NYU Law Alumni. Her list of accolades and accomplishments goes on and on. She was a truly honored guest to speak to the Staples community about "Empowering a New Generation."

Despite all her honors, Phoebe spoke articulately and eloquently in a comfortable, down-to-earth manner about key points she has gleaned from her varied life experiences towards success and power. She captivated her audience in her all-too-short lecture. Phoebe Eng's main talking points:

  1. Fitting in only gets you so far.
  2. You will only succeed at that which you love.
  3. Travel is a “must” for tomorrow’s leaders.
  4. Being a visionary is not a popularity contest.
  5. Empathy is the key to your success.

Phoebe elaborates upon these points and shares more of her wisdom in her critically-acclaimed book, Warrior Lessons.

Phoebe also shared her favorite books. Her favorite reading in high school:

  • Anais Nin’s Diaries
  • Interview with History by Orianna Fallaci
  • War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

Her current favorite readings are:
  • All three Harry Potter books
  • The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
  • Race Matters by Cornel West

Afterwards, Phoebe talked with anyone who wanted to discuss with her further and signed some books. Asian Cultural Society and the Staples community was very privileged to have her as a guest. Stay tuned for future guest speakers invited by Asian Cultural Society! Thank you again Phoebe! Also, much thanks to Mrs. Jordan, Mrs. P’an, Mrs. Cockfield, Mr. Fray, and the LMC staff.

For those who weren't able to attend, we have pictures of the event:
